Iguassu Falls is visited by butterflies

Those arriving at this time of year, the Iguaçu National Park is a warm color. Butterflies are everywhere: on the tracks, or in large groups and close to places to visit.

Behind the friendly insects are the researchers. The naturalist Roberto Rezende is a psychologist, but this time of year is a long time in the park in search of rare butterflies. The idea is to make a photographic record of the species that live there. The result is an overview of incredible colors and shapes.

When the management plan for the park was made, were listed just over 200 butterflies, but the estimate is that they live in the woods 800 different species. Find and identify these butterflies are the major challenge for researchers.

Iguaçu Falls – the park

The work Iguaçú means “big water” in the tupi-guarani etymology. The Iguaçú river, which forms the Falls eighteen km before the river meets the Paraná river, overcomes a ground unevenness and plunges 65m with a width of 2,780m. Its geological formation dates back to approximately 150 million years.

The Iguaçú River is 1,200 wide upstream from the Falls and downstream it narrows down to a 65m channel. The total width of the Fall in the Brazilian territory is around 800m and 1,900m on the Argentinean side. Depending on the river flow, the number of waterfalls ranges from 150 to 300 and the height of said waterfalls ranges from 40 to 82m, accounting for a 2,700m semicircular shape. The average water flow of the river is around 1,500m3, ranging from 500m3/s during the draught season to 6,500m3/s during the flood season.

The individual waterfalls may range from 20 to 300 depending on the water volume. The large waterfalls are 19, three of them on the Brazilian side (Floriano, Deodoro and Benjamin Constant) while the remaining ones are on the Argentinean side. The position of the waterfalls, most of them on the Argentinean side and facing Brazil, provide a better view to those admiring the scenery from the Brazilian side.

After taking a wide turn and the rapids, the bulk of the falls plunges laterally into the deep erosion gorge, the Devil’s Gorge. This 85m high waterfall is the one most appreciated by tourists; its shape resembles a horseshoe.

Crafts Center in Iguassu

The Crafts Center is a space dedicated to the craftsmen’s work, which gathers typical products of the west of Paraná. It also gathers pieces that refer to the ethnographic history of Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina through objects elaborated by different techniques and materials such as wood, leather, fabric and ceramics, among other raw materials.

But it is even possible to find objects created from other inspirations. From the diversity of our fauna were born the toucan, and the wood macaw, besides other animals. The coati was yet nicer in its cuddly version.

And the purchasing options don’t end thereabout. For those people “in the loop” of the latest trends of the fashion world, it is worthwhile seeing the bags, wallets and a wide range of clothing to suit any style. And there will be some accessory just like collars, earrings and wrings with natural stones to match the look chosen.

A modern and 100% iguaçuense look with stones produced by professionals of the COART (Cooperative of Craftsmen of the West and Southwest Regions of Paraná), of the Association of the Craftsmen, of the Craftsmen House and of Ñandeva. The latter is a program by the Itaipu Technological Park that, besides the Distribution Center, enlarged its scope of action through a store of its own in the Handcraft Center.

The newest option of leisure in the city has yet stores selling food products. Amid the variety of products offered, the visitor will find pepper, honey, brown sugar and homemade liquors.
